The Origins of Matcha

Matcha began not in Japan, but inTang Dynasty China (618–907 CE). Tea leaves were steamed, pressed into bricks, then ground into a coarse powder and boiled – a medicinal brew valued by monks for alertness.

The great tea scholar Lu Yu (733–804) recorded this method inThe Classic of Tea. He wrote:

“Tea may be consumed as coarse tea, loose tea, powdered tea, or brick tea.”

This confirms that powdered tea (末茶) – the direct ancestor of matcha – was already recognised in 8th‑century China.

The Song Dynasty refinement: By the Song Dynasty (960–1279), tea masters had developed a finer powder. They whisked it with hot water using bamboo whisks – a method called dian cha (点茶). This was the direct ancestor of modern matcha. Zen Buddhist monks embraced it for its ability to induce calm, focused alertness – the very combination of caffeine and L‑theanine that matcha is famous for.

The journey to Japan: In 1191, the Zen monk Eisai returned from China carrying tea seeds, Buddhist scriptures, and the method of powdered tea. He wrote Kissa Yojoki  – “On Drinking Tea for Health” – declaring tea a “divine medicine” that nourishes the five organs. He planted the first seeds on the island of Hirado, and later at Kozanji temple in Uji, which became Japan’s most revered matcha region.

While China later turned to loose‑leaf tea, Japan perfected matcha, weaving it into the fabric of Chanoyu – the tea ceremony – as a spiritual and aesthetic practice.

Why Enshi for Matcha? A Terroir as Good as Uji

The Perfect Terroir for Matcha

Enshi shares the same natural advantages as Uji – the historic heart of Japanese matcha – but with a unique mineral edge.

Frequent mist and fog – Like Uji’s river basin, Enshi’s mountains create natural shade, slowing leaf growth and deepening flavour.

Rocky, gravelly soil
Lu Yu’s “upper grade” earth, rich in minerals and perfectly drained.

High altitude (800–1200m)
Cool nights lock in sweetness and umami.

Selenium‑rich land
Enshi is the world’s only proven independent selenium deposit.

Higher zinc content
Our matcha contains naturally elevated zinc, an essential mineral for immunity and skin health.

Lower caffeine
Independent testing shows our matcha has less caffeine than typical matcha, while maintaining high L‑theanine for calm focus.

Certification
All our matcha is made from leaves grown on 533 hectares of organic gardens – certified by China, EU, US, and Japan

Crafted with Patience

Hand‑picked
Every leaf is selected by hand, not machine – ensuring only the youngest, most tender leaves become matcha.

Shade‑grown
For 20–30 days before harvest, we cover the plants with black cloth, blocking 90% of sunlight. This boosts chlorophyll (jade‑green colour), L‑theanine (umami), and amino acids.

Steamed, not pan‑fired
Like our Jade Dew, matcha leaves are steam‑killed to lock in colour and nutrients.

Stone‑ground
Slowly ground between granite stones to a talc‑fine powder – a method that preserves heat‑sensitive compounds.

The result: a ceremonial grade matcha that is smooth, creamy, and never bitter – whether drunk straight or as a latte.

Vibrant Jade
Creamy Umami
Smooth Finish

Our matcha is ceremonial grade – intended to be drunk straight, not just used for lattes or baking.

Colour
Bright, luminous jade green – a sign of high chlorophyll and proper shading.

Aroma
Fresh grass, sweet peas, a hint of marine umami.

Flavour
Thick, creamy, and savoury (umami) with no astringency or bitterness. A lingering sweetness that coats the mouth.

Unlike many matchas that are bitter, ours is designed to be smooth enough to enjoy on its own.

Grown naturally in open-air organic farms alongside legume, native crops and medicinal plants – no pesticides, just pure ecology.

This balanced ecosystem contributes to the tea's exceptional freshness and tenderness.

Why Matcha?

Because you consume the whole leaf, matcha delivers more nutrients and antioxidants than steeped green tea.

Focused Energy

L‑theanine + caffeine creates a smooth, sustained energy – no crash, no jitters.

Antioxidant Power

Matcha contains EGCG, a catechin known for its strong antioxidant activity – several times higher than steeped green tea.

Calm Clarity

L‑theanine promotes alpha brain waves, inducing a state of relaxed alertness.
